/ Contest – Royal Botanical Gardens

Main Street
RBG brings a picturesque town square to Mainstreet. A central water feature showcases a young Canna ‘Australia’ surrounded by seedling Xanthosoma mafaffa (Golden Taro). On dry land Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’ is engulfed by Artemesia schmidtiana ‘Silver Mound’ on each end of the display and the beautiful purple Oxalis triangularis subsp. papilionacea ‘Atropurpurea’ creates a colourful border between water and land.

Funway
All the right notes are hit by RBG’s Funway display. And ‘fun’ is the operative word. You’ve seen them everywhere, but not with this company: Ipomaea battata ILLUSION ‘Emerald Lace’ and Midnight Lace’ are justly popular for their amazing foliage color and forgiving nature in container plantings. You never see them with Oxalis siliqua ‘Sunset Velvet’ or Sedum Herbstfreude Group ‘Lajos!’ Spiky Sansevieria trifasciata and S. trifasciata ‘Laurentii’ provide just the right vertical accent to the arrangement and result in a combination of indoor and outdoor plants that is sure to liven up any spot with good sun.

Atrium Hot Spot
RBG is sizzling hot! Fresh on the heels of its new cactus and succulent display (come visit!), the Royal Botanical Gardens brings the desert to Yonge Street. A grass so steamy they named it ‘Fireworks’ (Pennisetum setaceum ‘Fireworks’) is the star. A showy version of Purple Fountain Grass, it crackles with excitement. Stunning grafted euphorbias (Euphorbia lactea f. variegata cristata) carry the searing news to the spotted Aloe variegata. Just in case it gets too hot, the display is backed by a planting of Aloe vera to soothe the burn.
